Mason alumni returning to World Series

The George Mason Patriots, er, Kansas City Royals are back in the World Series!

IMG_1668We’re more than happy to mix in a little royal blue with our Green and Gold at this time of year. Four Kansas City Royals executives and scouts are Mason graduates (and two Mason student athletes last spring were drafted into the Royals’ farm system).  So forgive me for taking some Mason pride in this Royal success!

Royals general manager Dayton Moore, assistant general manager of player personnel J.J. Picollo, director of scouting Lonnie Goldberg, and area scout Ken Munoz all are Mason grads. All have played an integral role in Kansas City winning back-to-back American League titles.

We’re proud that Mason helped develop them for success. They remain in close contact with the university and with our baseball program. All four were on campus for a “First Pitch Dinner” last winter in the Johnson Center.

As you baseball fans may recall, Kansas City last season reached the World Series for the first time since 1985 and lost to the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, in the decisive Game 7.

Mason Nation is pulling for a different outcome this year against the New York Mets. Game 1 is Tuesday. Go Mason! Go Royals!
