A new statue at the Scalia Law School

The momentous unveiling of the Antonin Scalia statue at the law school last week, in the presence of five Supreme Court Justices, reminded me of something the late Scalia once said: “the worst opinions in my court have been unanimous, because there’s nobody on the other side pointing out all the flaws.”

I hope the new statue will serve as a reminder for all of us at Mason of the importance of informed, reasoned, vigorous and civil debate of ideas as antidote for dogmatism and ideological tribalism and as time-tested path to move us forward as a society.

As dean Butler likes to say: “Learn, Challenge, Lead” — the order here matters.
